Fifty-five-year-old Navajo potter, Samuel Manymules, is a self-taught artist. He creates simple, yet elegant, pottery from the most basic of materials. Samuel enjoys experimenting with both traditional and contemporary forms, which is how he crafted this Kiva Melon pot. His polish is incredibly smooth, with a Pinon-pitch glaze as a finishing touch. Samuel has won numerous awards for his art, including accolades from the Heard Museum, Southwest Museum Indian Marketplace, and Santa Fe Indian Market. His distinctive pottery is visibly pleasurable.

The Navajo are relatively recent arrivals to the Southwest. They probably migrated from the north in the 16th Century thereby becoming a part of the Pueblo IV period. The Navajo have made pottery since their arrival; possibly they brought pottery with them during their southern migration. They made a plain and decorated pottery.
