The work of Monte White is unique among Navajo potters. He digs his own micaceous clay from near his home just outside the Hopi mesas. After forming and firing his creations, he adds the extra step of coating the ceramic with melted pitch from the pinion tree, a Navajo tradition in pottery making. This unusual canteen features decorative abalone, a wide leather strap, and half a gourd to serve as a dipper.
