Derrick Gordon is a master jeweler who draws much of the inspiration for his jewelry from historical Navajo implements. Early Navajo people used the bow and arrow for harvesting wildlife and self-protection. The Ke-toh (aka, bow guard) was developed as a leather cuff worn over the wrist of the bow hand to protect it from the snap of the bow string. It did not take long for the Navajo to decorate the opposite side of the bow guard and make it aesthetically pleasing. This ever-popular design for the guard is the same one Derrick used for this ring. How’s that for an abbreviated history lesson?
About the artist:
At the age of nineteen, Derrick Gordon sat down at the bench with his uncle, Delbert Gordon, and a promising new career was launched. Derrick was born and raised in Gallup, New Mexico. He came into this world in 1971, but it was not until 1990 that he began to bless us with his unique style of Navajo silver jewelry.
