For several decades, the Pueblo people of New Mexico have been producing ceramic constructions called storytellers. Rose Pecos is from Jemez Pueblo and created this small storyteller as a tribute to her grandchildren. Her daughter is married to a Navajo, so the children reflect both sides of their family and tribal heritage. The little boy is shown wearing a tall-crown Navajo cowboy hat, while his sisters eat watermelon and read books. The piece is a small, and intimate, family portrait told in clay.
