Beginning in the early 1980s, New Mexico artist Robert Rivera pioneered the use of gourds as decorative Southwestern art. Gourds were used as utilitarian ware by Native American people in prehistoric times, but Rivera has taken the simple gourd into a new era by painting, carving, inscribing, and decorating a vast array of pieces. This Zuni-inspired, Sunflower Turtle gourd was signed, using his Kokopelli mark, and dated 1987.
