A modern take on the most classic of all Navajo weavings, this contemporary Third-Phase Chief Blanket is a collector’s piece. Produced in the most traditional manner, using fine Churro sheep wool, dyed with indigo and spun into single-ply weft yarn, Ofelia Joe has created a thing of beauty. Although called blankets, they were actually made to serve as a wearing robes that were greatly prized by chiefs of northern Plains tribes as a status symbol. In the words of a Navajo healing prayer, “…and weave for me a garment of brightness,” this beautiful robe more than measures up to that high standard.

After the medicine woman told the people about the prayersticks she told them that there was a place in the underworld where two rivers crossed. It was called ni tqin'kae tsosi, fine fiber cotton (Indian hemp). There were two persons who brought the seed of that plant, they were spiders. They said that the people were to use the plant instead of skins for their clothing. So this seed was planted in the earth? More about this legend
