The Tohono O’odham people, formerly known as the Papago, reside in the harsh environment along the Arizona/Mexico border. During the 1940s, tourists began requesting miniature versions of their distinctive baskets. Eventually, the work grew smaller and smaller, until finally, weavings made of individual strands of black and white horse hair, woven with sewing needles, became the standard. This traditional Man and Woman basket is an excellent example of this regional art form.
