Navajo artist Chris Charley is a passionate and productive silversmith. Born in 1972 in Crown Point, New Mexico, Chris began his silversmithing career at the age of eighteen. Although a master of many styles and techniques, Chris still considers the more basic, traditional Navajo method of stamp work to be his favorite. This stamped silver feather and Navajo pearl set is crisp, clean, refined, and expressive. It is with these traditional designs and techniques that Chris feels most connected to his cultural history---to the “old ways.”

Feather: As a common denominator the feather figures imortantly in Native American myth, method, and tribal practice. The feather is a metaphor for flight, a messenger to the spirit world. Feathers are used decoratively, as prayer symbols, and as designs of power. Attached to an arrow, the feather becomes the universal emblem of the hunt, of flight, of finding the mark? Silversmith Work

When and how the Navajo acquired the art of working metals is unknown but there are reasons for supposing that it was introduced among them, or at least more developed and improved upon by them, since the time they have occupied their present country?
