This outstanding tapestry was woven sometime in the early 1970s by Betty Benally. Betty was a Navajo weaver living near Gallup, New Mexico. Her rug is hand-woven in earth tones resulting in the style known as Two Grey Hills. The rug came to Twin Rocks through an elderly couple scaling back their collection of American Indian Art. It is extremely well woven with symmetry and balance. Betty’s blend of natural colors and intricate design make for a beautiful example of Navajo weaving.

After the medicine woman told the people about the prayersticks she told them that there was a place in the underworld where two rivers crossed. It was called ni tqin'kae tsosi, fine fiber cotton (Indian hemp). There were two persons who brought the seed of that plant, they were spiders. They said that the people were to use the plant instead of skins for their clothing. So this seed was planted in the earth? More about this legend
