This historic Navajo saddle blanket weaving was created in the late 1950s and comes to us through a local estate. The rug has been rolled and stored in a cedar-lined closet for years and is in pristine condition. This blanket is woven of hand-spun wool in natural tones of black and white. The technique used to create this twill pattern rug is difficult at best, and reminiscent of the old wedge-weave style of early Navajo textiles. Because of their strength, durability, and comfort, rugs of this style and pattern were once used for saddle blankets. For those same qualities, they are now prized as exceptionally good floor rugs.

After the medicine woman told the people about the prayersticks she told them that there was a place in the underworld where two rivers crossed. It was called ni tqin'kae tsosi, fine fiber cotton (Indian hemp). There were two persons who brought the seed of that plant, they were spiders. They said that the people were to use the plant instead of skins for their clothing. So this seed was planted in the earth? More about this legend
