Late-classic-period serape design, Fred Harvey-period child’s blanket. Now if that isn’t a title to take notice of, we don’t know what is. Lorlena Atencio is a Navajo weaver from Cove, Arizona. Cove is a fabulous, little, incredibly scenic hamlet located in a remote and isolated area of the northern Navajo reservation. The town is surrounded by the Lukachukai and Carrizo mountains. Lorlena is an amazing weaver. For this rug, she was provided with single-ply, mill-spun Navajo Churro sheep wool, which was hand-dyed with natural indigo along with commercially made aniline dyes. Lorlena did an outstanding job. This textile is easily a museum quality piece.

After the medicine woman told the people about the prayersticks she told them that there was a place in the underworld where two rivers crossed. It was called ni tqin'kae tsosi, fine fiber cotton (Indian hemp). There were two persons who brought the seed of that plant, they were spiders. They said that the people were to use the plant instead of skins for their clothing. So this seed was planted in the earth? More about this legend
