To the Navajo people, geologic features can relate to many aspects of their culture. The Mittens of Monument Valley are believed to be the petrified hands of one of the monsters manhandled by Monster Slayer. Shiprock was the home of the late, great Monster Birds, and the rock encrusted rainbow known as Delicate Arch is a portal into the mystical realms. Master weaver Joann Johnson has placed these monolithic marvels of myth and legend upon this woven wonder. A full and glorious moon creates a powerful play of light and shadow upon the rocks, and stars accentuate the striking scene. Now that is powerfully poetic.

Navajo Basketry

Basketry is a woman's industry, which is also pursued by the nadle (he changes), hermaphrodites, or men skilled in the arts and industries of both men and women. Basketry, however, is not classified with textile fabrics (yistl'o), but with sewing (nalkhad). It is of interest also that, while the basket is in progress, the sewer is untouched and avoided by the members of her family?
