Samuel Manymules is a self-taught potter from Cow Springs, Arizona, who was born and raised into the age-old culture of his people. Samuel is aware of the ways of making Navajo pottery but has chosen to refine and remake that utilitarian tradition into something far more refined than all that. Samuel has put those higher standards to the test and risen above to create this wonderful minimalist pottery vase that has a pleasing sense of form. This marvelous vase is interesting, exciting, and unique. Samuel’s pot is traditionally made, but modern in style.

The Navajo are relatively recent arrivals to the Southwest. They probably migrated from the north in the 16th Century thereby becoming a part of the Pueblo IV period. The Navajo have made pottery since their arrival; possibly they brought pottery with them during their southern migration. They made a plain and decorated pottery. The plain being considered the older style? More about this legend
