Santa Clara/Kiowa potter Dean Haungooah specializes in contemporary sgraffito designs on small brown seed pots. Because his miniature pottery pieces are hand-formed and traditionally fired, they often display numerous shades of brown, running the spectrum from light tan to dark chocolate. In Kiowa, Dean’s last name, Haungooah, means “Sunlight reflecting off a buffalo horn,” so his pottery is reminiscent of his name. Dean has deep roots in Pueblo pottery; he is the son of Martha Suazo and Art Cody Haungooah.

The Navajo are relatively recent arrivals to the Southwest. They probably migrated from the north in the 16th Century thereby becoming a part of the Pueblo IV period. The Navajo have made pottery since their arrival; possibly they brought pottery with them during their southern migration. They made a plain and decorated pottery. The plain being considered the older style? More about this legend
