The Horned Toad is one of the most iconic of Navajo cultural beings. He is called Chei (Grandfather), is benevolent in nature, and covered in flint armor handed down from the Hero Twins. Being adorned with arrowheads makes the Horned Toad nearly indestructible and because of this Horned Toad is considered a deity. Peggy Rock Black has woven this wonderful interpretation of Grandfather Horned Toad decorated with the ceremonial basket theme to depict Chei’s relevance to the Navajo Universe.
