This squash blossom necklace speaks of the unusual relationship between the Mediterranean Sea and Navajo craftsmen. The rare, blood-red coral comes from around Sardinia, but it is the silver design elements that mark it as a legacy of the early Spanish explorers to the American Southwest. The head stalls of Spanish horses often featured an element called the naja, a crescent-shaped piece representing the Moorish symbol of the hands of Fatima, believed to ward off the evil eye. What are called squash blossoms actually represent pomegranates. In the not-too-distant past, an unknown Navajo craftsman pulled together all these elements into an exceptional piece of neckwear.
