Dean Hangooah was born into a long line of Pueblo potters, luckily he took the time to learn the family business. Because of this Dean is a traditionalist at heart. Only when the pot has cooled and reflects a smooth finish does Dean begin to carve his pottery with the sgraffito technique. Look closely at the detail on Dean's seed bowl and be amazed by his artistry. The great Sun God is the main theme here along with the water serpent, prayer feathers, life signs, bear claws, and rain clouds. That is a whole lot of design for such a small bowl.

The Navajo are relatively recent arrivals to the Southwest. They probably migrated from the north in the 16th Century thereby becoming a part of the Pueblo IV period. The Navajo have made pottery since their arrival; possibly they brought pottery with them during their southern migration. They made a plain and decorated pottery. The plain being considered the older style? More about this legend
