Otis Wright is a native of southeastern San Juan County and an amateur archaeologist with an emphasis on ceramics. Otis has studied the pottery types of the Ancient Puebloans for many of his 80-plus years. With a strict focus on originality, Otis has created this replica of an ancient corrugated pinch pot. From the gathering of clay through preparation, formation, and firing, Otis has maintained the integrity of the original process. The look and feel of the piece is as if it were just released from the grasp of the good earth after an embrace of 700 years.

The Navajo are relatively recent arrivals to the Southwest. They probably migrated from the north in the 16th Century thereby becoming a part of the Pueblo IV period. The Navajo have made pottery since their arrival; possibly they brought pottery with them during their southern migration. They made a plain and decorated pottery. The plain being considered the older style? More about this legend
