Marvin Jim has been carving again. Marvin’s interpretation of a cow with a cape is meant to introduce us to a Navajo Creation tale, where animals walked arm-in-arm with humans and shared their perspective on the world and relationships. An interesting aspect of this sculpture is that Marvin completely carved the cow, then opened it up to hollow it out. Marvin then added small pebbles to “give the cow a voice.” The end result is a nicely carved and extremely well-dressed bovine rattle.

Marvin Jim - Animal Sculptures:
Based upon the Navajo creation tales, the sculptures of Marvin Jim reflect a time long ago, when animals and humans walked and worked together to create a new world. These traditional stories speak of conversations among all beings, of behaving in a manner of mutual respect and of all beings having an equal position in the community. These legends are an essential part of the Navajo culture. The tales are of universal interaction, compassion and tolerance; the things necessary to live a balanced existence.
