This is a remarkable example of the weaving skills of Tohono O’odham artist Elizabeth Juan. This basket was woven in the early 1980s, when Elizabeth was at the pinnacle of her skill. Woven completely of horsehair, Elizabeth’s basket is of an exceptional fine weave and the symmetry is superb. The Tohono O’odham, which means “Desert People”, were formerly known as the Papago and are descendants of the ancient Hohokam culture. The Tohono O’odham originated the use of horsehair in making miniature baskets sometime in the 1960s.
