Harmony and balance are the basic building blocks of Navajo culture. With this in mind, Peggy Rock Black has chosen to delve into long-lost traditions to attempt an introduction of ceremonialism. Baskets such as these were once used to conduct a rite based on the Great Flood and eventual emergence or birth of the Navajo people. A handmade pottery bowl filled with water was buried in the ground to represent the flood. Baskets with openings such as these were placed over the top of the water source. The ceremony is about accepting those coming forth into a world of peace and prosperity. Much of the Navajo culture has been lost, but people like Peggy endeavor to relearn and reeducate through their art.
