Hopi Spider Bracelet
5 1/2" with 1 1/16" opening
Hopi artist Fermin Hewee uses a tiny coping saw with hair-like saw blades to cut his delicate designs. These miniature saws and their fragile blades are essential to accomplish such intricate patterns. Fermin’s design depicts Spider Woman, the special benefactor of the Hopi tribe. With the aid of the Sun God, Spider Woman created humans from clay and was also responsible for leading them to this, the Fourth World. Her Hopi name is pronounced koh-kyang-woo-tee and in English she is sometimes known as Old Spider Woman or Spider Grandmother.
