Elsie Holiday calls this basket “Hastiin Tsékooh” which loosely translates as “Old Man of the Canyons.” Elsie tells of how as a younger woman she walked the canyons near her Douglas Mesa family home looking for lost cows. She loved the experience of dropping into the hidden depths because it was moist and verdant. Elsie claims that she never felt alone or afraid below the rim because wherever she looked, she would see faces of the old people among the rocks, over hangs and clefts of the canyon walls. “They watched over and protected me,” says Elsie, “so I wanted to honor them with this basket.”

About the artist:

Navajo Basket Weaver Elsie Holiday

Considered one of the best Navajo basket weavers, Elsie Stone Holiday married into the famed Douglas Mesa family of weavers. Weaving baskets has become almost an addiction for her. "When I go two or three days without weaving I get anxious to get started again," she says. She weaves 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. "Sometimes I think, 'How long can this last?'", she wistfully states, but for now she is content with her art, finding immense satisfaction in creating premier quality baskets.
