Throughout his life, Dennis Ross has been introduced to a rich and varied mix of cultures. His mother was Navajo and his father Hopi. Both parents wanted Dennis to know and understand his history and traditions. As a young man, Dennis was sent on a placement program in Salt Lake City and there he was introduced to the church of his foster family. One might guess Dennis could have been confused by such a range of information, instead he assimilated what works for him and grew to appreciate the rest. This is the how and why Dennis came to create this wonderful nativity corn people set of seven pieces. It is carved of cottonwood root and is influenced by all three of his inherent cultures.

About the artist:

Hopi/Navajo Folk Artist Dennis Ross

Asked how he first started carving, Dennis Ross answers with a laugh, "My brother - he gave me a knife, and a stone, and a piece of carving wood, and said, 'Here you go'." Dennis was twenty-six years old. His brother, Harry Bert, also gave him a little constructive criticism on that first experiment into the creative world of carving, but Dennis took it from there.
