This stately steed is the creation of Navajo sculptor Marvin Jim.  The Navajo people adore their horses, and even in this day, it is still normal for them to keep several.  Because the horse is so loved and revered, it is not uncommon to see them represented in the art of the people.  It is rare when someone creates a sculpture that is this dignified.  From the root of a cottonwood tree, Marvin has hewn the shape of one of his favorite creatures.  He finished and painted it in a fine fashion.  Marvin's horse reflects a time when animals walked upright and joined humans in building a world suitable for one and all.  Then, as is usually the case, the humans insulted their cohorts and pushed them away.  The animal kingdom threw off their garb and walked, crawled or flew away, never to use the spoken word again.  Marvin's speckled pony stands as a metaphor for relationships and opportunities lost because of arrogance and ignorance.

Marvin Jim - Animal Sculptures:
Based upon the Navajo creation tales, the sculptures of Marvin Jim reflect a time long ago, when animals and humans walked and worked together to create a new world. These traditional stories speak of conversations among all beings, of behaving in a manner of mutual respect and of all beings having an equal position in the community. These legends are an essential part of the Navajo culture. The tales are of universal interaction, compassion and tolerance; the things necessary to live a balanced existence.
