Yellow Rock Point Pictorial
46" x 58"
Charles Shipman Collection
Over 15 years ago, Laurathena White created this weaving she called a "Yellow Rock Point." The overall influence is Teec Nos Pos. She has, however, woven countless other pictorial elements into the rug that boggle your mind in their complexity. Storm, Chief Blanket, Chinle, Klagetoh and Teec Nos Pos rug patterns; pottery; the four sacred mountains, Twin Rocks, prayer feathers; Shiprock, butterflies; Yeis and numerous other items are represented. The weaving was originally collected by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shipmen shortly after its completion. Mr. and Mrs. Shipman are retiring and moving to a much smaller home, so they have made the decision to divest part of their collection. We are the grateful recipients of their divestiture.

After the
medicine woman told the people about the prayersticks she told them that there
was a place in the underworld where two rivers crossed. It was called ni tqin'kae
tsosi, fine fiber cotton (Indian hemp). There were two persons who brought the
seed of that plant, they were spiders. They said that the people were to use the
plant instead of skins for their clothing. So this seed was planted in the earth? More about this legend
