Changing Woman
These four
visit Changing Woman in her home in the west and see how she changes her age and
form as she passes through doors at each of the directions. She decrees her gifts
to earth people Cloud, rain, pollen, dew and gives them prayersticks. She tells
them that now "there is no meanness left" in her : however First Man
and Woman who went east are mean, and from them will come epidemics, colds, and
coughs to be cured by offerings of white corn? More about this legend
Basketry
Basketry
is a woman's industry, which is also pursued by the nadle (he changes), hermaphrodites,
or men skilled in the arts and industries of both men and women. Basketry, however,
is not classified with textile fabrics (yistl'o), but with sewing (nalkhad). It
is of interest also that, while the basket is in progress, the sewer is untouched
