About the artist:
Born in 1954, Acoma potter Wilfred Garcia displayed early interest and
talent as an artist. As a young man, he married Sandra Shutiva, the
daughter of Stella Shutiva, and sister of Jackie Histia.
Inspired by the work his mother-in-law, Stella, did in plain, white
traditional Acoma clay, Wilfred established himself as a fresh force in
contemporary Pueblo pottery. He was first recognized for outstanding
artisty in Jerry and Lois Jacka’s book,
Beyond Tradition, and garnered
numerous awards including a Santa Fe Indian Market Best in Show.
