This wonderful weaving belonged to Carole's grandmother, Grace Douglas. Grace was a dynamic force in the early Pebble Beach community. She founded the Douglas School which is now the Robert Louis Stevenson School and Douglas Ranch Camp, a wonderful children's summer camp which has operated for over eighty years.

Grace had a wonderful hacienda/ranch style home and lived a vigorous outdoor life. This weaving is a reflection of her lively spirit and the rug shows signs of having lived a full life because it was long enjoyed in their own home. This weaving comes from the Late Transitional Period in Navajo weaving showing elements of both Transitional weavings paired with a natural white background that became especially popular in the 1930's. The orange and red are a reflection of Navajo weavers love for color, especially after aniline dyes were introduced in 1880. The weave in this period's blankets tended to be somewhat looser. Looking at this rug, it is a great demonstration of the movement from rugs to blankets and the blending of natural and aniline colors in a dramatic handspun Navajo weaving.

Weaving
After the medicine woman told the people about the prayersticks she told them that there was a place in the underworld where two rivers crossed. It was called ni tqin'kae tsosi, fine fiber cotton (Indian hemp). There were two persons who brought the seed of that plant, they were spiders. They said that the people were to use the plant instead of skins for their clothing. So this seed was planted in the earth? More about this legend
