Really nice Tohono O'odham baskets are uncommon. The O'odham people, also known as the Papago, are a group of aboriginal Americans who reside primarily in the Sonoran Desert of the southwest United States and northwest Mexico. Tohono O'odham means, "People of the Desert." Sometime in the 1970's, Irene Antone wove this great basket of yucca fiber, devil's claw and willow. Irene's workmanship and attention to detail place this vessel in the top ten percent of O'odham baskets woven of these natural materials. Symmetry, visual appeal and enduring quality make this basket very collectible.
