1940's Eyedazzler
20'7" X 7'6"
"We have had possession of this weaving for some time. Because of its immense size, it stays folded neatly in our rug room until the occasional curiosity seeker asks to see it in its entirety. I remember one incident when a tourist, demonstrating an odd mixture of bombast, asked to see the most expensive items in the store. We unfurled this weaving and to put it plainly, it shut him up."
"Quite frankly, I had forgotten the magnificence of this piece until while in San Diego for a special market, I placed the rug on display for all to enjoy. Everyone came over to visit the large rug, some knowing that never before and probably never again would they see such a large, beautiful Navajo weaving. I am humbled by the thought of that one Navajo woman over half a century ago, patiently working over her loom to create this masterpiece." - Georgiana Kennedy Simpson

This beautiful, and enormous, Navajo weaving was purchased from the collection of Mrs. Frances Talbot. Ms. Talbot purchased the rug at auction approximately 30 years ago and has had it in her collection ever since. The very extensive Talbot collection has been amassed over the last 50 years, and consists of exceptional Southwest art objects.
This rug was probably woven in the late 1940s or early 1950s, and is a whopping 20' 7" long by 7' 6" wide. As you can see from the hands peeking over the top of the rug, it took seven people to hold it up for the photograph. It features an eyedazzler style design, comprised of the serrated diamond pattern, which indicates that it was likely woven on the Northern part of the Navajo Reservation. The weaving quality is extremely nice for such a large rug. There is slight damage along the edges, however, the damage is minimal.
The rug is truly exceptional in that rugs of this size have been rarely woven in the past and are almost never woven today. For somebody looking to fill a large floor space or make an extraordinary addition to their collection, this rug will fit the bill.
