Road Ravin' Minis
Chapter 8: Kira and the
Gila Cliff Dwellings

by Kira Simpson

Gila CaveWe went to Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. I believe it was in New Mexico’s Mimbres Mountains.

We had to take a long winding road to the visitor center, and I got carsick too many times to count. Ugh, I felt horrible for about nine tenths of the way. Let me correct that...more like ninety-nine hundredths of the way. By the time we got there, there could have been bubbles popping around my head.

Kira in the Gila Cliff DwellingsI had to go back to the van to grab something while Mom and Grange went into the visitor center to get our Junior Ranger programs. I finished up my ice cream (lemon-berry) while I worked on my Junior Ranger activities.

After awhile we went on a one mile hike to the cliff dwellings. The ruins were not unlike the ones around Bluff. There were some good sized “houses” up there.

There was a kitchen that had a petroglyph of what looked like feet. There was another area that had a snake and a person drawn up on the wall.

Grange in the Gila Cliff DwellingsWe had to stop for awhile so we could finish our programs. When Grange finished, we went tearing downhill. Mom didn’t even jog.

We waited on the bridge for Mom and watched the water rush by under our feet. We went back to the visitor center to get our badge. We also got a C.D. and a certificate. The C.D. was about conserving the land and saving history.
