Chapter 4: Kira and Frank Lloyd Wright

by Kira Simpson

TalilesinYesterday, we went to a place called Taliesin West. Taliesin West is what Frank Lloyd Wright called his winter home. It was a beautiful place. We saw most of the rooms there and they were cool! I’ll tell you about some of them.

He had different names for certain rooms. One was a dark, well, not dark, more like a little dimmer than the other rooms, that they called “The Kiva”. They used it for watching slides on their projector. There were some house plans pasted on boards sitting around. Maybe it was used as a conference room, too.

Taliesin Living RoomIn most of the rooms, when he was around, he didn’t have any glass windows, all that was just open space. The walls were made out of rocks put together with sand cement. It was really interesting to see how he did his designs.

One room was really nice because it had origami furniture, yellow shag carpeting and lots of sunlight. That room was used for a family room or for parties. The parties were incredibly fun. Even celebrities would come to the parties! His granddaughter, Anne Baxter, was a celebrity, too! The apprentices (architect students) came to the parties all the time. Everyone must have had fun with that.

fountainThere were three fountains that I saw there. The fountains were cool because each one had a nice style to them that promoted serenity. There was an iron dragon by the third fountain that spat out fire at night. The man who designed it thought that no dragon should be without its fire. I agree with him.

Before we went into the last room, there were a lot of sculptures that reminded me of the Body Worlds 3 exhibit I saw earlier that week. They were weird.

The last room was one of his best designs. It was a theater in looks, but there was a different purpose, because there was a piano alcove. The room was made so that people who were entertaining did not have to speak loudly to be heard. Frank Lloyd Wright did not like the idea of ushers showing people to their seats, so he put lights on the sides of the walkway. This guy really knew his stuff. I wish I could have met him. That is a place I am going back to someday, most definitely.
