Chapter 1: Gunnison, Colorado
by Georgiana Kennedy Simpson

After spending a relaxing evening in Gunnison, Colorado, which included a rousing game of Mexican train dominoes, I spotted the Pioneer Museum. The museum is located on a six acre property and has a number of historic buildings, cars, a train and numerous interesting collectibles.

The kids each picked their favorite antique cars. Grange selected a Chevrolet cabover delivery truck and a Caterpillar tractor, Kira liked a 1953 Ford Jubilee tractor and
I preferred a 1924 Ford Model A with beautifully restored wood.

My favorite building was the Paragon schoolhouse. The structure was evidently designed by a shipbuilder, and the lines were lovely. Kira enjoyed reading the requirements for a 1923 teacher contract and the teacher’s job description. I think Grange’s favorite part was ringing the bell on Cinder Ella, a wonderful old train which had been retired to the park.

We enjoyed every aspect of the museum, but it was time to hit the happy trail...onto the mountains and Rocky Mountain National Park.
