Historic Native American Baskets
These
Hopi baskets are drawn from the Simpson family private collection. We originally
set these weavings aside in the late 1970's and early 1980's, and have maintained
them as part of our collection ever since. Recently, we have decided to focus
the collection almost exclusively on Navajo basketry, so we are deaquisitioning
most of our non-Navajo specimens.
Over the years, the collection has been used to promote the artists of our
area through loans to museums and other special events. The commitment we
have to the weavers of the northern Navajo reservation has overcome our desire
to keep these wonderful Hopi pieces. Although it will be hard to see them
go, we hope they will be well received in their new homes.
