Steven Begay

His career had humble beginnings, brought in first to work in the Fort Wingate School, he quickly moved to Holbrook where he was thrilled to be receiving $20 for each bracelet.  While in Holbrook, he met Kari, his wife for well over thirty years.

After a couple of years, they moved to Phoenix where he started receiving an hourly wage from Al Zuni and continued to improve his gold and silver techniques.  Once they had an opportunity to obtain housing on the Navajo reservation, they left for the Winslow, Arizona area.

He continually improved his work.  In 1988, he entered his first juried Native American art competition, the Heard Indian Market.  To his professed amazement, he won a Best of Category ribbon for a silver belt.  In 1996, his first year at the Santa Fe Indian Market, he won Best of Category for a squashblossom and a blue ribbon for a concho belt.  Since then, he has racked up the awards and kudos for his unique visions in silver overlay.
